It is an ultrasound test that has the aim to study the endometrial cavity in an accurate and painless manner without resorting to more invasive tests such as hysteroscopy.
HOW IS THE SONOHYSTEROGRAPHY PERFORMED?
The sonohysterography is performed by introducing a very thin disposable and flexible catheter into the uterus. This operation does not involve pain or discomfort.
Through the catheter several ml of normal saline (sterile water) are inserted to distend the uterine cavity and highlight any pathology present (endometrial polyps, submucosal uterine myomas, diffuse hyperplasia of the endometrium, uterine malformations, etc) using transvaginal ultrasound.
HOW LONG IS THE EXAMINATION?
The exam lasts about 15 minutes: thanks to a special monitor, the patient can directly monitor the investigation and interact with the doctor who will explain any finding.
After examining the patient will get the report, accompanied by printed images.
IS IT A PAINFUL EXAMINATION?
The sonohysterography is not a painful examination; for this reason it presents advantages compared to hysteroscopy. The examination is generally well tolerated and does not require the use of analgesics. In one case out of 4, modest pelvic pain similar to those produced by the menstrual cycle was found. This pain disappears spontaneously within a few minutes.
IS IT A RELIABLE EXAMINATION?
As with transvaginal ultrasound, the reliability of this examination is closely tied to the experience of the specialist who performs it. According to the results of scientific studies published in international journals, it is possible to say that the degree of accuracy is about 85. This is also why the sonohysterography is about to become the first choice test to evaluate patients with suspected bleeding and endometrial ultrasound alteration, resorting to diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy only in confirmed cases.
WHICH IS THE BEST PERIOD FOR PERFORMING THE EXAMINATION?
The best time is the first half of the menstrual cycle, possibly in the days following the onset of the blooding. In these days, in fact the visualization of the uterine cavity is made easier by the low growth of the endometrium, and there is the certainty of the absence of a pregnancy.
IS IT REQUIRED A SPECIFIC PREPARATION?
Insert some suppositories of Chemicetina with the purpose of disinfecting the vaginal cavity three days before the examination. It is also recommended to avoid unprotected intercourse until the day of the examination.
HOW AND WHERE CAN I RESERVE THE EXAMINATION?
To schedule the examination, phone on the first days of the menstruation by dealing with the number 0549 994529 or 0549 994506.
